Family-to-Family Education Program
The NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program is a
12-week course for families of individuals with severe brain disorders (mental
illnesses.) The course is taught by trained family members.
Registration for this program is required. Topics covered
include:

Symptoms of schizophrenia,
major depression, bipolar disorder; getting through critical
periods of crisis

Subtypes of depression and
bipolar disorder; panic disorder and OCD; telling our
stories

Basics about brain biology and
the causes of brain disorders

Problem solving workshop

Medication review

Empathy: inside mental
illness

Communication skills

Hand-to-Hand Education Program:
Hand-to-hand is a free, 9-week series of classes for family
members with children or teens who have mental/emotional
disorders. The program is taught by trained family members.
Registration is required to attend. Topics covered include:
Information about illnesses of the brain and their treatment:
Explanation of disorders such as ADHD, major depression,
childhood schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and OCD as well as
tips for understanding your child’s diagnosis
Current information about medications, side-effects and
problems with medication compliance
Discussion of the biological basis of mental illnesses,
treatment options and recovery
Coping Skills:
Gaining empathy by understanding what a child with a serious
mental illness experiences
Understanding special education needs and working with juvenile
justice
Handling periods of crisis and relapse
Advocacy:
Guidance on locating appropriate support and services within
the community and obtaining better mental health services
Advocacy for appropriate federal and state policies
